Parent- Child Interaction Therapy
Address your child's challenging behaviors with more connection and less yelling
PCIT is therapy for young children with behavioral and emotional issues. PCIT focuses on improving the quality of the parent-child relationship by adjusting the way the parents and children interact with each other. Through parent coaching and intentional time spent in play, children improve their confidence and security in the parent-child relationship. Parents learn effective communication and discipline skills. The result is a child who is better able to regulate their emotions and independently solve problems.
Are you having trouble helping your little one gain control of their BIG emotions?
Tell me if this sounds familiar:
Despite being a loving and dedicated parent who is committed to raising a happy and confident child, you find yourself in scenarios that cause embarrassment. You yell and get frustrated more than you’d like. You want to do what’s best for your child, but you’re tapped out and have no clue what technique you’re supposed to try next.
You’ve done everything you’re “supposed” to do to support and discipline your child in an effective manner, but you still find them having a hard time in difficult situations.
- You're at your wits end and feeling quite helpless
- You love your child, but you don't always like them at this point
- The physical aggression and constant meltdowns are causing chaos in your home
- You want harmony in your home and ease in your parenting!
You want your child to be happy, confident, caring and secure!
I'd love to help you get there.
Picture this: you get a phone call from your child’s school. You brace yourself for the barrage of complaints about your child’s anger, meltdowns or somehow disrupting the class. Your child’s teacher says, “I couldn’t wait any longer to call and tell you. They’re having a GREAT DAY!”
This is what can happen with PCIT. Improvements in all areas of your child’s life, even outside the home! PCIT can give your child tools to problem solve and regulate their emotions in a healthy way and you the skills to help them achieve the confidence and security necessary to do so. PCIT can help you:
- Develop a parenting style that better meets your child's needs
- Improve the quality of your relationship with your child
- See improvements in your child's behavior and emotional development
- Play with your child and learn at the same time!

These techniques have been proven to decrease tantrums, aggressive behavior, and rule-breaking as well as promote positive behavior. PCIT is also proven to increase a child’s self-esteem, security in the parent-child relationship, and compliance with rules.

Frequently Asked Questions
Parent-Child Interaction Therapy (PCIT) is an intervention for young children with behavioral and emotional issues. PCIT focuses on improving the parent-child relationship by fixing the way the parent and child interact.
Online parent-child interaction therapy begins with the parent attending training or the “teach” phase. I will explain the methods, terminology, and skills we will use in treatment. We will also use role-plays to ensure that you are grasping the skills. After the “teach” phase, we move on to child-directed play. The focus of this phase is interacting with your child in a way that builds confidence, improves the parent-child relationship, and increases the frequency of prosocial behaviors. You will play with your child while I monitor the interactions and provide real-time feedback via a bug in your ear. At the end of the session, we discuss your use of the skills and suggestions for improvement. Once you have mastered the skills used for child-directed play, we will proceed to the parent-directed play phase.
The parent-directed phase focuses on discipline and effective commands. We will have another “teach” session, followed by more monitored play. Since I will be providing feedback through a bug in your ear, the child has little to no awareness of my involvement. This will allow them to be able to just enjoy the quality time spent with you.
Multiple factors affect the length of time it takes to complete online parent-child interaction therapy in Maryland, Virginia, and Washington, D.C. Treatment length depends on your child’s age, specific behaviors to be addressed, and commitment to therapy. Parents who are dedicated to attending sessions, completing homework, and implementing skills usually complete therapy in 12-20 sessions.
